Asian Counseling and Referral Service

ACRS offers a broad array of multilingual, behavioral, health and social services to Asian Pacific Americans and other low-income people in King County. Services include counseling and case management, employment, naturalization and immigration, ESL, problem gambling and substance abuse treatment, recovery, food bank, congregate meals, youth development, and legal clinic. Most services are offered free to low income community members. ACRS also accepts Medicaid, Medicare and most private insurance plans for mental health care and offers a sliding fee scale based on household income. ACRS also has meeting space available to outside agencies.

The Columbia Public Health Center specializes in children’s healthcare for ages 0-20. We provide physical examinations, immunizations, chronic disease management, illness care and dental care for children. We also provide prenatal care for pregnant women and family planning/STD services for people of all ages, including teens. Additionally, we have the WIC (Women, Infants, Children) program services available at our clinic. We provide interpreters for our clinic visits. Our application workers can help patients apply for DSHS medical insurance coupons.

Horn of Africa Services is a multi-lingual, multicultural organization offering support and advocacy services in response to the health, employment, housing, educational, and social service needs for East African refugees and immigrants living in the greater Seattle area. The Job Connection-Rainier Vista offers holistic employment services and support for resident of Rainier Vista and those from the surrounding community who meet income guidelines. Program participants receive individualized and customized services that may include, but is not limited to career assessments, pre-employment skills development, access to supportive services such as childcare, transportation, clothing, education and job training that foster economic and employment stability, and post-employment career planning. The Job Connection staff work closely with the Rainier Vista computer lab to assist job seekers in developing e-mails, resumes and completing online applications.

JumpStart is a micro-enterprise development program offering financial and business assistance to micro-enterprises owned by refugees and asylees living in the Puget Sound area. Financial assistance consists of loans and, for our Muslim clients, “reba-free” financing. Business assistance consists of business plan development, business compliance, cash management skills development and referrals. JumpStart works with people who may not qualify for bank loans due to the small size of their request or limited credit history. Interest rates and closing costs are generally lower than bank loans. Unlike most conventional lenders, JumpStart provides each client with one-on-one business technical assistance focused on the specific needs of the client’s business.

LIHI manages and/or owns over 45 low- income to market rate apartment buildings. Tyree Scott is one of those apartment complexes. It is located on the same lot as REWA. There are 21 units of various rent amounts and bedroom sizes. There are 6 units that are strictly for transitional housing. There is a part time case manager on site for the families in transitional housing and resource coordination for all other residents. The Nature Consortium’s mission is to teach environmental lessons through the creative arts and hands-on conservation projects. Our Youth Art Program provides free enviro-art classes to youth ages 5-19 at The Rainier Vista Art Studio. Classes are offered after school Monday-Friday 4-6pm & additional classes are offered during school breaks and summer. A variety of hands-on visual art classes like painting, sculpture, kite making and performance classes such as music, theatre and martial arts are available. Our program includes educational field trips and a monthly “teen night”, which is an open art studio night for teens. The Somali Cultural Group runs a parenting program which teaches mother how they raise their children in America. The newly expanded Columbia Branch Library has more seating, 24 public computers and better access for people with disabilities. The updated collection includes materials in Chinese, Spanish and Vietnamese with smaller collections in Somali, Oromo, Amharic, Tigrinya and Tagalong. Also available are materials for people who are learning English as a second language. The library has a new children’s room, study room and meeting room. For check-out there are books, videos, DVD’s CD’s and magazines. The library’s monthly flier lists the date and time of programs, including story times at the Columbia Branch.

Senior nursing students work with both providers and residents who live in and near Rainier Vista. They participate in health assessments such as checking blood pressures and discussing medications and health concerns at events such as monthly Senior Gathering and other group meetings in and near Rainier Vista. Students also give short health presentations at community meetings. In conjunction with Annie Edwards of Neighborhood House, students can make home visits. Nursing students are usually available on Wednesdays [all day] and Thursday mornings during the winter (Jan-Mar) and during the spring (Apr-May). Each group students plans and implements a Rainier Vista community project in partnership with the providers and residents of Rainier Vista. In the past such events have included health fairs and a Family Fun Night. The students also attend various meetings in the community such as at the Rainier Vista Providers Meeting. Other nursing students who are earlier in their nursing program may visit the RV community to interview key informants for their introductory experience to the RV community and surrounding neighborhood.


SecureTrans LLC

Southeast Youth & Family Services

Southeast Youth and Family Services (SEYFS) provide programs that vary in services and intensity, to respond to client and community needs. Youth and families are enrolled in one or more of the following programs, Individual and Family Counseling, Managed Care/Mental Health Services, Primary Diversion, African Immigrant and Refugee Outreach Program, Kinship Care, Family Functional Therapy (FFT), Multi-systemic Therapy (MST) and Aggression Replacement Training (ART), based on intake and ongoing assessments. SEYFS direct service staff offer periodic classes, groups sessions and workshops for clients. These programs provide specific skills training for clients who in the counseling and case management programs, and also can be an alternative for clients who do not necessarily need individual counseling.

The Youth Tutoring Program is an after-school educational enrichment program for students in 1st through 12th grade. We provide a challenging, safe and stimulating environment where students can get help with homework and build skills in reading and math. Students attend two tutoring sessions a week where they are matched one-on-one with a tutor. We also partner with parents and advocate for students in their schools.
