Ivy Cleanup in Viewpoint Park

The NRV Landscape Committee invites you to join your neighbors for a volunteer workparty on Saturday, Oct. 9 at 10am in Viewpoint Park to cut ivy off the trees in the back of the park. Impact will provide some tools, but bring your favorite ivy whacker, if you have one, and your gloves. We’ll spend a couple hours pulling down the ivy that’s grown up in the last three years. With any luck, there might even be refreshments!

Next Neighborhood Clean Up

The September neighborhood clean up will be Saturday, Sept. 11, at 10am at the Central Park. Come on out, bring your gloves if you have them, spend some time with your neighbors and beautify our neighborhood. Oh, and grab some coffee and doughnuts, too!

Could you be a Big Brother?

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Puget Sound, a donor-supported mentoring
organization with programs in King County, is looking for male
volunteers to be Big Brothers. Volunteers meet with a child in school or on the weekends to play games, do homework, see movies, visit a zoo or museum or just hang out. Children in our programs are kids who could
greatly benefit from additional adult guidance. Children are referred to the program for many reasons, and many children come from homes where quality adult attention is limited by single-parenthood or transitional housing, including foster care. Whatever the circumstances, these children need an adult in their lives who is caring, consistent, knows how to listen and can be a good role model. We especially need male volunteers for our many waiting boys. Research shows our programs are working: compared to their non-mentored peers, Little Brothers and Little Sisters are less likely to use violence to solve problems, become more trusting of their parent or guardian, resist substance abuse and improved school attendance. Art in the Alley

The Columbia City Gallery is hosting Southeast Seattle’s 4th Annual Outdoor Arts Festival. Forty local artists and craftspeople will be showing (and selling) their works, including paintings, “art-cycled” mosaics, sculpture, wearable art, soap and jewelry. It’s all taking place Friday, August 13, from 4pm to 9pm, in Dot’s Alley (between Edmunds & Ferdinand, behind the Gallery), in conjunction with Beatwalk.

New Playground Construction Day

KaBoom is building a playground at the Boys & Girls Club across MLK, and they need volunteers for the build day. Free breakfast, lunch, snacks and drinks will be provided.
