Sign up today to volunteer for one hour each week reading aloud to little kids! More than half of all kindergartners in our state are entering school without the social, emotional, physical and cognitive skills they need to be successful. Research shows that those who start behind often stay behind. The good news is that reading with kids on a regular basis can make a real difference.
United Way of King County is currently recruiting volunteers to read aloud to young children (ages 3-5), one or two at a time (not group reading), at preschools, Head Start classrooms, and child care centers throughout King County. There are sites in and around the New Rainier Vista neighborhood!
Visit www.uwkc.org/readers and click the “register today” link at the bottom of our webpage to get involved or email ameyrich-blomquist@uwkc.org for more information.
There’s a work party at the new trail in Cheasty Greenspace at Mt. View (right across S. Alaska at the south end of NRV) this Saturday, October 1 from 10am til noon. Also, save the date for the November work party, November 6, in conjunction with Green Seattle Day.
Do you see the announcements for the monthly NRV Community Cleanup and think it’s a great idea, but think that 10am on a Saturday morning is unreasonable? Come out for an afternoon cleanup! On Saturday, Sept. 24 at 3pm, join your neighbors in some community service. Grabbers and bags provided. Bring gloves if you have them, although there are some to borrow if you don’t. There may even be treats.

Bring a drink and something to share and join in a Potluck BBQ at Mary DeJong’s house after the work party.
(This work party is running long enough that you can come to the Neighborhood Cleanup at 10am, have a doughnut and some coffee, pick up some trash, then head out to Cheasty at Mt. View and do some plant relocation and trail leveling, and then join in a potluck. There, a full Saturday of outdoor time and community connections!)
