Our neighbors across Columbian Way continue to improve the Cheasty Greenspace at Mt. View. Much of the clean up is completed and now it’s time to start prepping for the trails. (If you’re interested in knowing what trails are planned, check out the map.)

There is a work party this Saturday, April 2 from 10am til noon. Meet at 2809 S Alaska Place; bring your own water, wear sturdy shoes and dress in warm layers. Gloves, tools and instruction are provided. Kids are welcome!

There is also a work party planned for Earth Day on Saturday, April 23, from 10am til 2pm. Meet at 2809 S Alaska Place; bring your own water and lunch, wear sturdy shoes and dress in warm layers. Thanks to everyone who attended our Community Meeting on Feb 28th! We got some really good feedback about what type of crops to grow and what kind of classes/workshops to offer. In a matter of months, you’ll see the vegetables you requested growing on the farm!

Now that we have a better plan for the farm, we can start working!

We will have Volunteer Work Parties every Tuesday and Saturday from 10am to 2pm at the farm. Please come for any amount of time during those hours that works for you. We take a lunch break at 12 or 12:30, so if you’re planning on staying the whole time, we suggest you bring a lunch.

As it stays light later and the weather warms up, we’ll be shifting Tuesday work parties to a late afternoon/evening time and adding another weekday morning. Please let us know if there is a different time that will work better for you. We are open to changing our work party schedule so that more people can come.

Please feel free to contact Mariah Pepper, Outreach Coordinator ((206) 387-6644 or mariahp@solid-ground.org) or Scott Behmer, Farm Coordinator ((206)-694-6828 or scottb@solid-ground.org.

Come out and join your neighbors this Saturday morning, March 12 at 10am, for the monthly neighborhood clean up. Bring your gloves if you have them, although there are sometimes some available to borrow. There will be cheery yellow trash bags, grabbers and coffee and donuts.

Please note that the Neighborhood Clean Ups have moved to the second Saturday of the month.

SEED Arts is offering a free youth mosaic art class here at the Neighborhood House at Rainier Vista. The class is for youth 13 to 18 years old and will be Monday and Friday from 3:30 to 5:30, March 14 – June 17th.

Participating youth will learn mosaic art techniques and work alongside a local artist to create a mosaic for a new park in the area.

Stop by the Neighborhood House or call Kate Farmer at 206-461-4568 ex 211 for more information or to sign up.

It’s NRV Neighborhood Cleanup Time! Come out and join your neighbors on Saturday, Feb. 12 at 10am to help beautify our community. If you can volunteer to help us clean up New Rainier Vista for an hour or so, please show up with gloves, if you have them. We’ll have some gloves if you don’t have them, and we’ll have coffee and donuts.

The folks in Cheasty Greenspace at Mt. View (across Alaska from NRV) have a work party coming up this weekend. Since the February Neighborhood CleanUp is happening next week, here’s your chance to get in twice the volunteering this month!

The workparty is Saturday, Feb. 5 from 10am to 12noon. They will be working to remove the last of the ivy from the forest floor with the idea that trail building can happen this spring. Meet at 2809 S Alaska Place with sturdy shoes and water - they’ll provide tools and gloves.

The folks who are improving the Mt. View portion of Cheasty Greenspace (just south of us on the other side of Alaska) have a couple of volunteer options coming up.

MLK Day of Service: Monday, January 17 from 10am-2pm. Meet at 2809 S. Alaska Place, 98108. Tools, gloves and light refreshments provided. We will be removing ivy and blackberry from Cheasty/Mt. View; please wear sturdy shoes and warm clothes. Please invite your friends and neighbors out for this great day of service honoring the life and legacy of Martin Luther King Jr!

In advance of the MLK Day of Service, they need people who can do some local canvassing to spread the word on the event. Flyers will be on the front porch on 2809 S Alaska Place with a sign-in sheet. Please indicate where you will be handing out the promotional materials. It would be great to get the word out to Rainier Vista folks, the Boys and Girls Club, neighbors and of course area businesses.

It’s NRV Neighborhood Cleanup Time! While we generally meet on the first Saturday of the month, in January we will gather on Saturday, Jan. 8, 2011 at 10am. If you can volunteer to help us clean up New Rainier Vista for an hour or so, please show up with gloves, if you have them. We’ll have some gloves if you don’t have them, and we’ll have coffee and donuts. Come on out and join your neighbors.

It’s hard to believe, but it’s almost time again for the monthly cleanup. This coming Saturday, Dec. 4th, we’ll meet in Central Park or in front of Neighborhood House if it’s raining. As usual, the time is 10:00 until about noon. Doughnuts, coffee, camaraderie and the pleasure of keeping our neighborhood cleaned up will all be available. Hope to see you there!

The grading and terracing at the Urban Farm (officially it’s the Seattle Community Farm) is nearly done. The first volunteer opportunity at the Farm is coming soon! Come out and help move wood chips over paths, add mulch to the planting areas and build a few small retaining walls.
