Come join your neighbors for a Thanksgiving feast, Wednesday, November 16 from 5pm to 7pm at the Neighborhood House. Bring a dish to share (and label your contribution with the name of the dish and primary ingredients). There will be raffles and games! Spend some time with your neighbors and start the holiday season off right! Need more info? Contact Naomi at nchang@seattlehousing.org.

Do you use the phone books that get delivered to your front porch? There are several of them, with multiple delivery dates, and lots of people take them directly to the recycling bin. If that’s you, you can now opt-out of delivery.

You’ll need to go to the above link and create an account. But once that’s done, you’ll be able to tell the phone book folks which phone books you want (or tell them you don’t want any). If you want to avoid the upcoming June delivery, opt out before the end of May 16. But if you miss that deadline, you can still opt out of any future delivery.

The link above is also good for removing your name from many catalog mailing lists. Minimize what goes into the recycling bin by making sure the stuff doesn’t show up at your house at all!

Impact will begin applying an organic turf fertilizer around noon today (9/16) in the parks.  Homeowner and rental turf areas will be done on Thursday, continuing into Friday as necessary.  This is just fertilizer - no weed control.  The fertilizer is organic and will come with a noticeable smell, which should fade overnight.

With all this hot weather, please remember to water the plants in your yard, especially if your yard is not on the irrigation system. If you have a tree in either your front or back yard and the tree has been in place less than three years, please consider providing supplemental water. Gator bags can be purchased (email me at “christina <at> dolcideleria <dot> com” if you need info on where to get them). Or, you can also take one or two 1 gallon milk jugs, poke some holes in the bottom, add a layer of gravel (larger than the holes, small enough to get through the top), then fill those with water and place around the bottom of the tree. This provides a long, slow drink for the tree and minimizes water loss.

If you have any specific landscape questions, you can contact the NRV Landscape Committee at “landscape <at> newrainiervista <dot> com”.

With the return of nice weather, we’re also seeing the return of the ice cream vans/trucks. Please remember (and remind your kids) that getting ice cream and candy wrappers into the trash cans is part of the process of eating the ice cream, and part of being members of our community. Thanks!

This just in from Impact: Garbage and yard waste should have been collected today, Friday, April 3. Recycling will be picked up next Thursday, April 9. Please do not leave your recycling out until then; bring the cans in off the alleys.

Impact also sent a new Collection Calendar. Download it here.

Impact will be fertilizing turf areas at NRV in March. The fertilizer is Sanctuary 8-3-6, “a blend of protein meals inclusive of feather, fish, meat & bone and blood meals plus other natural fertilizer materials.” From the manufacturer:

The Sanctuary is a family of natural-based fertilizers that are designed to provide the foundation for healthy turf and soil. The Sanctuary products combine the synergistic benefits of high quality organic ingredients and essential mineral nutrients to feed both the soil and the turf. This unique approach to turfgrass management brings solid agronomics and sound economics together.

The landscape committee has a copy of the product label. If you’d like to review it, please email the committee at “landscape (at) newrainiervista (dot) com“. The committee hopes to be able to give the community a few days advance notice before the application, but for now, all we know is “sometime in March”, probably on a sunny day.

So, the City’s been talking about improvements to their recycling program that start at the end of March. Great for them, but what about those of us with a different service provider? Here’s the info on how Impact Property Services’ Solid Waste Division is handling the change:

It is with great pleasure to announce Impact Property Services customers will receive the same service in SPU’s “Curb Waste” brochure. This month customers that do not have yard waste service will receive a letter from Impact Property Services explaining the new organic and yard waste.

New Curbside organics collection:
Customers will return the bottom portion of the letter (paid postage response) announcing their selection from a 13 gallon, 35 gallon, or 95 gallon cart, or they can opt out and compost food and yard waste at their home. If a customer does not reply they will be contacted by an IPS service representative or will automatically receive a 13 gallon cart. However, residents that opt out and rather compost on site, they will be contacted by a city inspector to confirm their home composting exemption.

The Cost for the yard waste / organic carts:

  • 13 gallon = $3.60 per month
  • 35 gallon = $5.40 per month
  • 96 gallon = $6.90 per month
  • Additional cans, bags, and bundles of yard waste will be charged $2.95 per unit.

Other Collection Services:
Impact Property Service has been proud to offer our customers for years the opportunity to dispose of old televisions, motor oil and appliances. If an Impact Property Service customer requires a special collection they would need to call (206) 716-1310 extension #10.

A friendly customer service agent will assist you with all services and pricing will be explained to you over the phone. All items will need to be outside your home and at the curb for collection, on a scheduled day. After you have a scheduled day for collection a professional driver will arrive and remove the unwanted items, and a follow up call to ensure 100% satisfaction.

We are happy to announce that we have improved our communication with our customers through our new website at http://www.impactpropertyservices.org/solidwaste. There you will find up to date customer information, pay with credit card information.

Impact Property Services Solid Waste Division is committed to, waste reduction, recycling and composting, and fast effective service, as it is our goal to provide complete customer satisfaction.
