Seattle Tilth and the Seattle Community Farm are sponsoring a four-part gardening class that will teach you how to start or maintain your Northwest garden. Interpretation will be available in Vietnamese, Chinese (Cantonese) and Somali.

Tuesdays from 5:30 – 6:30pm:
May 3rd

Participants are encouraged to put their new skills to use by staying for the Seattle Community Farm’s regular Work Party, which goes until 8pm.

Please tell us if you are planning to come, or drop by. Classes are FREE. Questions? Contact us at urbanfarm@solid-ground.org or (206) 694-6746 x2

Looking to meet your neighbors? Learn new cooking techniques and/or recipes?

Rainier Community Kitchen is an opportunity for neighbors to gather to cook good food together and go home with meals for their families. Our combined shopping dollars go to healthy, vegetarian ingredients and we enjoy learning new recipes as we cook together. Currently, we meet on the second Thursday of the month, 6:30-8:30p, in the kitchen of the Rainier Community Center.

The fee is $25 and you’ll enjoy two hours of camaraderie with your neighbors, a sense of accomplishment, and will create 4-6 servings of 4 menu items to take home. Register at http://class.seattle.gov/parks/Activities/ActivitiesCourseDetails.asp?aid=23&cid=66281 by Weds, March 9 to join us on March 10.

It’s getting towards spring, and the Seattle Community Farm (at the north end of NRV) is planning their first growing season. They’d like to share their plans with you, so everyone is invited to a Community Meeting on Monday, February 28th from 6 – 7:30 pm at Neighborhood House. At the meeting you will:

  • Help decide what to plant. Vote for what vegetables you want to grow and eat!
  • Hear about the Work Trade Program and how you can get involved
  • Hear about other program ideas, such as a Children’s Garden and gardening classes

There will be food and childcare provided at the meeting. There will be interpreters for Chinese, Vietnamese, Somali and Amharic.

Also, plan now for the first work party of the year on Saturday March 5th.

The big new apartment building they’ve been working on across MLK from NRV is complete! It’s called Tamarack Place, it’s got 83 units of low-income housing, and it’s got street-level retail/office space.

There will be a grand opening event on January 20, from 11am - 1pm, with a special program at noon. Special guests will include HUD Regional Director Mary McBride and Deputy Mayor Darryl Smith. Refreshments will be served.

The NRV January Community Kitchen has been postponed. A new date will be announced when there is one to announce.

It’s hard to believe, but it’s almost time again for the monthly cleanup. This coming Saturday, Dec. 4th, we’ll meet in Central Park or in front of Neighborhood House if it’s raining. As usual, the time is 10:00 until about noon. Doughnuts, coffee, camaraderie and the pleasure of keeping our neighborhood cleaned up will all be available. Hope to see you there!

Come join us for the Community Kitchen on Friday, December 10th from 12noon – 2pm at Rainier Vista Center. There is no charge and this is a fun way to meet your neighbors and get a chance to eat delicious food from around the world. Please call Kate Farmer at 206-461-4568 ext. 211 for more info.
