Following up on the call for volunteers earlier this month. The Neighborhood House has added new classes to their Tech Center offerings, and they are in need of volunteers.

Tuesday: 5-6:30 ESL Level 1 Class
Wednesday: 4-6 ESL Level 2 Class
Thursday: 2-3:30 RIA Class
Thursday: 3:30-5 Microsoft Word Class
Thursday: 5-6:30 ESL Level 2

Volunteering during the ESL classes would be very similar to volunteering during any of our classes except the volunteer would be working with Tech Center Staff as well as a Seattle Literacy Tutor. There are also some open lab times available as volunteer opportunities.

Please

Are you a retired teacher? Are you currently pursuing a degree in education and would like to increase your teaching experience in a culturally diverse setting? Are you a previous camp counselor or someone who has worked with elementary-school students and knows how to effectively work with them? An hour a week could do wonders for our local students and their academic success.

Neighborhood House has an immediate need for reliable, patient volunteer after-school tutors at Aki Kurose Middle School (3928 South Graham Street). You’ll be working with middle-school students helping them finish their homework as well as improve their academic skills. Orientation and training will be provided.

We’re looking for people who are available from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. once a week for at least three months.

If you (or anyone you know) are interested in becoming an after-school tutor, please e-mail RominaR@nhwa.org for more information on how to get started as an after-school tutor.

Don’t miss this important meeting for any parents living in New Rainier Vista.

School Advocacy Night
This Friday, 1/22/2010 from 6PM – 8PM at the Neighborhood House

Learn about your neighborhood school, learn ideas to influence school planning, build skills to communicate with policy makers.

It’s a draft plan, but the current proposed “attendance area” maps have been released. Access them here:

School Assignment Maps

Of particular interest: New Rainier Vista have been assigned to three schools. Those in Phase 1 will be assigned to Kimball. In Phase 2 (across MLK), those north of Oregon (across MLK from Columbian) will be assigned to John Muir and those south of Oregon will go to Hawthorne. Perhaps these divisions don’t mean much to us now since Phase 2 isn’t built yet, but they could pose challenges in the future.

These attendance areas are not yet final. Individuals with questions or concerns should contact Seattle Schools. Ways to do so are listed here.

With so many postsecondary education and career options available, this is the perfect opportunity for teens and young adults to start exploring their future and learn about the amazing opportunities that are waiting for them! The fair will feature:

  • Representatives from colleges, trade schools and community resources and organizations
  • Workshops
  • College Bound Sign-Up
  • Food
  • Rally
  • Step Show
  • Raffle

12:00pm – 3:30pm

Rainier Valley Teen Center
4520 Martin Luther King Jr. Way South
Seattle, Washington 98108

Only one third of all high school students graduate prepared for college and only 9% of students from families in the lower socioeconomic quartile earn a college degree by age 25. Since 85% of all jobs in today’s economy require a post secondary degree or skill certificate training, providing teens the financial and academic resources to prepare them for college is critical.

We invite you and the teens you serve to come explore and see how they can be successful doing their own thing, whether college or career! Contact Marinda Melonson at mmelonson@positiveplace.org for more information.

There will be a Tools 4 Schools event at the Rainier Vista Boys and Girls Club on Friday, August 28 at 4:30-7:00PM.  Register for a new membership ($20 a year!) and receive a backpack filled with school supplies.  Get there early as supplies will be limited!

After you’ve got your Tools 4 Schools, stop by the Neighborhood House for story readings and bookmark decorating on Friday August 28, at 4:30pm (4410 29th Ave. S.).   Free books and resources!  This is for kids of all ages!

The local La Leche League meets here at NRV in the WAMU Room upstairs in the Neighborhood House. The next meeting will be Wednesday, 8/12, at 10:15am. The topic will be Improving Family Nutrition, but the discussion will first focus on the needs and questions of the moms that attend the meeting.

La Leche League meetings are a gathering of mothers and babies who are breastfeeding, struggling with breastfeeding and interested in breastfeeding. We will discuss the questions/needs that moms come with and a planned topic if time allows. If you are struggling with a breastfeeding issue, come and get support from fellow mommies. If you are enjoying breastfeeding, please come share your experience and support the other moms in your community! If you are pregnant, come and hear the tidbits of info we all wish we had known before our babies were born!

Children, pregnant women, partners, dads and grandmas are all welcome!

For more info, please contact the leaders of the South Seattle La Leche League, Emily (LLLemhealy@gmail.com) and Erin (erin.lalecheleague@gmail.com).
