Open Lab Assistant (Morning, Afternoon or Saturdays, 1 to 3 shifts/week)
The Technology Center at Rainier Vista is looking for volunteers to assist once or twice a week during open lab shifts: morning (10 – 12 PM) or afternoon (3 – 5 PM), or some Saturdays 11AM-5PM (or any portion of that time). Volunteers in the technology center during open lab will assist lab staff in creating a welcoming and supportive environment for participants of all ages and cultures. Volunteers may help students in the computer lab with homework, help adults with learning the basics of computers, navigating online job applications and other computer related tasks. Volunteers will also assist in enforcing operating procedures and rules with youth, adults, programs and the larger community.

Drop-in Basic Computer Skills Instruction Assistant (Schedule TBA)
The technology center will start drop-in basic computer skills class in early July. These classes are flexible in their content but seek to introduce computer lab patrons to different functions of computers. Due to the expected, varied skill levels of students in this class, we are hoping to recruit 2-3 volunteers to provide one-on-one assistance to students.

Basic Computer Workshop Assistant (1 Wednesday a month 8:30 – 1 PM)
The Technology Center at Rainier Vista is looking for volunteers to assist during monthly basic computer workshops. They are scheduled for June 22nd and July 20th from 9 am to 1:30 pm. Volunteers will assist staff with a class of 13-15 students with varying levels of computer and English skills. This four hour workshop will introduce basic computer terminology, navigation, internet skills, navigating a website to sign up for future classes, and signing up for and use an email account. Great for a volunteer who wants to help in the technology center, but can only commit to one or two days a month, and is available or can be available daytime Wednesday 8:45 until 1:30 PM.

Do you use the phone books that get delivered to your front porch? There are several of them, with multiple delivery dates, and lots of people take them directly to the recycling bin. If that’s you, you can now opt-out of delivery.

You’ll need to go to the above link and create an account. But once that’s done, you’ll be able to tell the phone book folks which phone books you want (or tell them you don’t want any). If you want to avoid the upcoming June delivery, opt out before the end of May 16. But if you miss that deadline, you can still opt out of any future delivery.

The link above is also good for removing your name from many catalog mailing lists. Minimize what goes into the recycling bin by making sure the stuff doesn’t show up at your house at all!
