The 5th Annual Green Seattle Day is coming up on November 6, and our local greenbelt is one of 20 sites around the city with an event!
Cheasty Greenspace is our neighborhood urban forest and the Mt. View section is a 10 acre parcel on the SW corner of Columbian and Mt. View Drive, just south of NRV. There has been a dedicated group of volunteers who have been working for the last few years to make these woods safe and accessible for our whole community with monthly cleanups and two DON Small and Simple grants. For Green Seattle, they have over 200 trees to plant and would love some volunteers.
More information about the restoration efforts for Mt. View, please visit CheastyMtView.com or Cheasty Mt. View’s page on Facebook.
Saturday, November 6
10am-2pm
Please register to come out and plant trees and continue the work in our local greenspace.
It’s NRV Neighborhood Cleanup Time! As always, come out and join your neighbors on the first Saturday of month, November 6, at 10am in the Central Park, or under the front door shelter at the Neighborhood House if it’s raining. Grab some coffee and a donut, then spend an hour or so helping us clean up New Rainier Vista. If you have them, please bring your gloves. There will be additional gloves, bags and grabbers available.
Every year, SEEDArts highlights different cultures from the diverse community of Southeast Seattle and beyond in its family focused Arts Gumbo Series. Each culture is celebrated at the Rainier Valley Cultural Center with performances, a question and answer session, participatory workshops and food samples from each culture.
On Saturday, Nov. 13 at 6pm, Arts Gumbo partners with the regionally acclaimed Northwest Tap Connection to present Rhythms of the Sole, a cultural journey through African American music guided by the sounds of rhythm tap dance. A Q&A including audience participation will follow. After the performance, a variety of traditional African American desserts will be offered.
Arts Gumbo will take place at the Rainier Valley Cultural Center, 3515 S. Alaska St. (the SW Corner of Rainier Ave. & S. Alaska St.) in Seattle. Tickets are: $10 general admission, $7 for students and seniors, $5 for children ages 4-18, free for ages 3 and younger, and $25 for families of up to 4 people. Tickets are available at the door and online through Brown Paper Tickets at https://brownpapertickets.com/producer/1784.
Come out this Saturday, Oct. 9 at 10am for a volunteer workparty in Viewpoint Park to cut ivy off the trees in the back of the park. Impact will provide some tools, but bring your favorite ivy whacker, if you have one, and your gloves. We’ll spend a couple hours pulling down the ivy that’s grown up in the last three years. With any luck, there might even be refreshments!
