Boys & Girls Club Grand OpeningThe Boys & Girls Club that’s been under construction across MLK from us for the last year is having it’s grand opening celebration on Saturday, November 15. Doors open at 10am, with speakers starting at 10:30, including Mayor Nickels, King County Executive Ron Sims, the Club’s Executive Director Bill Burton and more. The Open House starts at noon and runs til 4pm. Drop by to:

  • Tour de Club – take a tour of the new 40,000 sq. ft. facility
  • Start Art – paint your own tile with this community art project
  • BBall 4 All – play basketball and other fun games
  • Digital Arts – hop on a computer and become a digital imaging pro
  • Detective Cookie’s Chess Room – play a round of chess
  • Construction Gallery – check out the evolution of the construction
  • Partner Organizations – meet and learn about our program partners
  • Take a few free-throws with Sheryl Swoopes from the Seattle Storm
  • Love football? Come play with Bobby Engram and Blitz from the Seattle Seahawks
  • Main stage performances – Dangerettes open the show at 12:00pm
  • Sound Transit booth – safety information and an opportunity to tour a parked train at Columbia City Station (1 block south of Club)
  • Purchase a limited edition Rainier Vista Boys & Girls Club Grand Opening T-Shirt
  • Giveaways for children and teens

March for YouthEarlier this year, more than 500 neighbors turned out to bring attention to youth violence and the needs of families in our community in the first annual March for Youth. Now Mayor Nickels is now proposing $9 million towards youth anti-violence initiatives in the next City budget. It’s a good start, but we can do better!
